CraftBukkit is dead, will Spigot be next?

  1. It seems CraftBukkit's download page has been severed with a DMCA takedown.
The API page as of posting this is still up.
    But the real question is...

    Is Spigot next?

Update: RIP in piece, Spigot and Bukkit.
I don't know too much about this, but I think Wesley did the right thing. Imagine working your heart out on a project for 2 years, only to find out another company has owned your work, and decide to mess with the project. If this is to troll Mojang, I applaud him, and you should too.

Update 2: Thought I might include this in the OP. For Sponge, FAQ can be found here. The official webpage can be found here. Note that there has been a terrible attempt at a fake DMCA takedown for Sponge, if you want to have a little giggle, you can find that here. There is also a *clean-room* approach for a replacement called TridentSDK, GitHub repos can be found here and here. And let's not forget that @md_5 hasn't given up on Spigot just yet. Sponge's IRC is at, make sure you read the topic before saying anything ;)

Hmmm.... I hope that isn't permanent....

That's super strange. Hopefully it's not intentionally..
  4. Why would they need to dcma something they own? Surely since they own the website they could just remove the downloads..?

I don't think that is the appropriate way to tell people that they are moving servers lol...

  6. Well, I think its also safe to assume bukkit isnt 'dead' Mojang have already said the project is going nowhere.
Who else would have the legal rights to take down the page?
  7. I took a look at the download page to check if 1.8 dev build is out yet today morning and everything was there, strange.

  8. Spigot isn't really directly related with them so I'd assume for now we're fine. Either way I'll be downloading all the latest versions of stuff I use and need soon. Just incase.

From what Mojang claims tho they have a good standing with cruse, if they wanted to host them there self I don't think they need to Dcma it, on that point how do you Dcma something you own and have allowed to do under your ownership for years?!??

I hope, I really hope that this is some miss understanding... I do hope
  11. It's only a joke i'll remove it. But seriously what would CraftBukkit be taken down for?

  12. for anyone whom has not seen it yet.

    From: Wesley Wolfe <email redacted>

    Subject: [SL] [abuse-google] Copyright

My name is Wesley Wolfe. A site hosted on an IP address owned by Multiplay
(ip redacted) is infringing on my software copyright by the distribution
of a software known as CraftBukkit.

Original content can be found at

and the appropriate license for previously mentioned content can be found at

The provided license requires the use of included or linking code to
provide the original source under the GNU GPL license version 3, or any
later version. An official notice has been sent to Mojang AB, whereas the
Chief Operating Officer, Vu Bui, responded with the clear text:

Mojang has not authorized the inclusion of any of its proprietary
Minecraft software (including its Minecraft Server software) within the
Bukkit project to be included in or made subject to any GPL or LGPL
license, or indeed any other open source license

As the Minecraft Server software is included in CraftBukkit, and the
original code has not been provided or its use authorized, this is a
violation of my copyright. I have a good faith belief the distribution of
CraftBukkit includes content of which the distribution is not authorized by
the copyright owner, it's agent, or the law.

Pages including infringing content: - links to: - links to 45 pages, with
infringing content beginning on craftbukkit build #1597 and currently
ending at craftbukkit build #3115, but please allow me not to enumerate
    them all (the
    first infringing build)

I have a good faith belief that the above information is accurate and that
I am the copyright owner or authorized to act on the copyright owner's

Pursuant to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. § 512(c)), the
above mentioned pages need to be expeditiously removed or access-of

  15. General outline from reddit user barneygale:

My rough understanding of the issue:

    1. Wolv contributed GPL code to bukkit
    2. Bukkit distributed this code as part of an LGPL/GPL distribution
    3. However, bukkit had no right to say that mojang's code was LGPL (the quote from Vu Bui says this)
    4. Therefore they were distributing unlicensed/proprietary software alongside GPL software
    5. Therefore the GPL code was used illegally, as it cannot be combined into proprietary code.

So with wolv making that copyright claim the only way it's legal to continue distributing Bukkit is if they also distribute the minecraft server source with it.

  16. Sounds like this is the case. CraftBukkit will probably not "die" to it though.
  17. I just edited my post with the proper reasoning. Wesley just put a notice in for mojangs behalf basically.
  18. Since mojang owns bukkit, I'm not sure that they wanted him to do this. So, it looks like they are pissing off both mojang AND the bukkit community.
