  1. Hi guys,

I just bought an OVH server and did a speedtest test. I only got 20mb/s! I thought it would around 80. Are OVH scamming me? I sent a message to the support and they said to install a kernel. I have absolutely no idea what a kernel is!

  2. Did you test it in Megabytes or Megabits?

A Kernel is an Operating System thingy. Not 100% sure what it is, but I am pretty sure it is based around Linux.

if you have a 100 megabit port the most you will download something is at 12-13 megabytes a seconds. A linux kernel is like the system32 of linux.. they might have meant re-install the operating system
  4. so having 20mbps is normal for a 100mbit line?

Their is a difference between MB/s and mbps.
You will have a 100mbps line, so you will download at around 13-14 MB/s

    What OS are you using?
Have you tried different speedtest servers?

no its normal to have 100 mbps on a 100 mbps line >.> I have 20 mbps at my house right now according to speedtest (I can download at 2 megabytes a second)
  7. You can install their gre ovh security kernel if using Linux. If you're using Windows you don't have to.
    Please note that:
100Mbps (Megabit per second) = 12.5MB/s (Megabyte per second)
1Gbps (Gigabit per second) = 125MB/s (Megabyte per second)
