Server machine CPU upgrade

  1. Hi,

Apologies if this is the wrong thread.

I'm currently hosting one of my small servers at home with an old desktop PC.
    I'm looking to upgrade the current CPU (i5 650 - socket 1156)
What CPU's could fit in this sytem? And would it be worth the upgrade?

    Thanks for reading!

  2. Hi,

That CPU is at least 6 years old if I remember correctly. Most CPU's within that range have been taken out of production and aren't sold anymore. You're better off saving some money and buying a new motherboard with a CPU instead.

  3. I don't think there's any upgrade path for you. That chip has an integrated graphics processor, so you'd need another Clarkdale chip. There's no i7. There's a Xeon, but that probably wouldn't help Minecraft at all.

    See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1156#Supported_processors

You could add RAM or even a SSD, but I question the wisdom of spending money on a 9 year-old system. (I'm in the same boat, with an i7-860 from 2010.)

  4. Makes sense thank you!
