Single thread

  1. Hi,

Do minecraft servers run off 1 core or can it run off multiple cores? I've been told by a few people that it runs on 1 core only.. Is this true?
  2. Yes, it runs on single thread.

  3. Minecraft is single core.
  4. The short answer is "yes," however in reality it's a bit more complicated.
The core of the minecraft server, world handling, entity ticking, player ticking etc are run synchronously, however things like plugins can run asynchronously if programmed in an async fashion. I believe the connection handler (netty) is asynchronous as well (thanks md_5!).

  5. Yes, but plugins also have the option to run asynchronously
  6. You make it sound like there is some magical "async switch" to turn on/off async computing, but it's not really that simple. Just a note :p

As others have mentioned, the main processing happens on a single core. Other cores can be utilized by plugins, but they are typically far less CPU intensive.
