Where to get good staff?

Wondering where a place is to get good staff, my current staff are OK, but they all seem specialised in one area. Some (minority) staff will wander around the server helping members, while the other lot seem to just build useless stuff (/warp desert, /warp jungle, /warp pvp1, /warp pvp2, /warp pvp3, /warp sandpvp, /warp joepvp, etc) and ignore everyone else.

So how can i improve my staff, and/or get better staff?

  2. Guides, strict rules and get someone to check upon your staff team or do it yourself. Get staff out of your own server?

I have learned that PMC is not a very good place for staff members.

Problem is, good staff only come once in a while, my server is getting a good community, but a lot of these members just want to play, and so have no wish to be staff. My problem then is that it would be very hard to manage the whole server on my own.

  5. I have never had those problems myself, I believe that there are always people willing to help out... though, you can improve your current staff by getting more guidelines and maybe seperate them in a few teams, with a teamleader to enforce that the staff members do their job. Reward them every once in a while.

  6. You run a cracked server, for one. That means your players are already self selected to at least not be willing to pay for a good game. Maybe that's not fair, but it's worth thinking about...

Anyway, you need to identify the players who would make good staff members. You probably also need to do a better job of managing your staff. Maybe they need a reference guide, a staff manual, or something similar.

In general, you first need to identify the right people, model the right behaviour for them, and be careful to reward those that are ready with more responsibility and sack those who aren't cutting it.

  7. The only place that you should get staff from is within your server. Create a system where somebody with the traits you want in a staff member can quickly and easily rise to the top and be separate from other players. For example, all of my creative server's staff are great builders, dedicated, and willing to help players.

Problem is, they always ask and/or whine for staff. Only about 4 of my staff in all time have got to any rank without asking.
Should i just ban them if they ask, or what?

Oh and thanks for all the useful answers so far :)

  10. If somebody's begging me for staff or keeps asking, they've pretty much just ruined any chance they have for getting staff. Those who want staff that badly probably won't make good staff.

  11. I make this a rule so that when they ask they can clearly be warned and then banned if they continue. There will be no confusion for those who actually read the rules.

As a general rule, people asking for staff in-game are probably not your best bet.

Make sure they are over 16 and willing to speak to you each and every day.

Watch over your players. Dont take applications because they will always sell their selves and make themselves sound good
Best way is to look over players and find the helpful ones.

and to be honest none of your current staff are helpful at the moment.

Im going to agree that 16 year-olds+ are usually better, however there are obviously exceptions (im 13, and i believe suicidal_tissue is younger).

What do you mean by speak to me? Do you mean to hold an actual skype conversation?

Willing to verbally speak to the owner and actually understands what the word qualification means. Otherwise they are no good.

  16. I do find it funny when you see arbitrary age limits on staff for certain servers you can pretty much guess the age of the owner...

That said, its not easy for everyone to spot what traits good staff need. You've got to watch out for red flags too. Remember, you don't have to feel like they could be your friend. At the end of the day, they're making life easier for you and more fun for your players. Players that are active, fun, mature, engaging, dedicated, and kind are more likely to make good staff members. Maybe they like my little pony and you think that's weird, but whatever they're doing a good job...

The other issue, for me, is your age. I've found my best staff have been 16+, but more reliably 18+. Maybe this is just unique to my own experience, but I found that my younger cousin had trouble retaining staff that I recruited for him as they didn't respect him...a lot of that was his age, too. However, I have met server owners who are 15-16 that I've respected much more than others I've met in their 20's or 30's with careers and families. So, it could be that this isn't an issue for you at all.

Wow. I had really never noticed that, but you are right.

Adults will not really look up to children, and say "you can tell me what to do", or "i respect you".

  18. Well, I'm not sure. I dont know if that holds for everyone. That is, all kids as owners and all adult players as staff. It's more just an observation I suppose.

I typically go for 16+, sometimes 15 at a push, especially if their birthday is nearing 16 in a couple of months. Followed by how mature they are.
I also identify the players behaviour, whether they are helpful to the community or not. Often I get feedback from players who have helped others out, whether they are a normal player or staff.
I then check their playtime. I will not have a player as staff if they've been active less than 3 months.

I do allow applications, but once they've passed the first stage, I often get them to participate in team activities.
My most recent topic was "Order mobs in order of importance". Although pointless, it allows me to see how the accepted applicants work together with problem solving and teamwork, since Minecraft will often involve team work. Then after that exercise, I then ask them to file a report on themselves of their strengths, weaknesses and what they can do to improve what they have mentioned. Although once again it may sound pointless, it allows me to see analysis on an individual aspect. Applicants that state 100% strengths and 0% weaknesses are often turned down.

Once the application process is over, I often get them on a "training" server where I'll train them up, followed by putting them on the main server, in the way that "on-the-job training" works in everyday business practices.
I have not yet had a staff that has abused the server in anyway as I have been quite spot on with whom to allow or not.
