Unofficial Explanation About the DMCA

Unofficial Explanation About the DMCA
  • This is an unofficial explanation contributed by users of the Spigot forums.

This does not represent the views of the SpigotMC administration.

If you wanted the CraftBukkit or Spigot jar, you simply had to download it. As you probably know, this is no longer possible. This article explains why.

I see people posting questions about this everyday. I want to be able to refer them to one article explaining everything, without having to explain it again.

Please edit the article if you want something to be changed.

Wolvereness is someone who developed CraftBukkit. He did this for a long time, only to find out that the Bukkit project is actually owned by Mojang. He didn't like that of course, so he filed a DMCA takedown.

    DMCA Takedown(top)

This basically means, that Wolvereness filed a DMCA takedown to prevent people from downloading CraftBukkit. He did this to prove a point. A number of people agree with him: it sucks that you write code, only to find it's owned by Mojang.

A lot of people also think he just ruined the community.

    IRC Chat(top)

There was an IRC chat on October 11, 2014. It can be found here:[2014-10-10].htm.

    The important parts:

    Bukkit now has two choices:

    • rewriting all code by Wolvereness
    • release it under Wolvereness' license

At the moment, it's not clear what Bukkit is going to do. Spigot is, though:

Spigot didn't give up like Bukkit did. They talked with their lawyers and came to the conclusion that they could continue Spigot, but it wouldn't be possible to just download the .jar: hence why a project called 'BuildTools' was introduced.

BuildTools allows you to compile Spigot, CraftBukkit and Bukkit on your own computer. That way, you can get a Spigot, CraftBukkit and Bukkit .jar, without downloading it; meaning that the DMCA doesn't have any effect!
